125th Anniversary Weekend Report

125th Anniversary Weekend at Kingswood, Dearne.  6th 7th 8th October 2017

The motto of the Brigade is Fun, Faith and Fellowship and at a recent weekend held at Kingswood Activity Centre in Dearne, near Doncaster, they certainly lived up to their motto.

The event was held to mark the end of the Brigades 125th year and to celebrate this, over 100 members, and leaders gathered on a Friday night and began their weekend with a campfire, and so the fun began.  The members came from far and wide, Leyland in Lancashire, Leicester, Durham, London, The Wirral, Manchester, Oldham, Ashton u Lyne, Hartlepoool and of course Yorkshire joined together and forged new friendships to last for many years to come.

On Saturday morning following a hearty breakfast the activities began, Archery, High Ropes, Buggy Building, Abseiling, The Leap of Faith, a Nightline or a Cratestack.  Varying age groups, from 4 years to shall we say “very much older” joined in the activities to suit their ability or maybe bravery, but everybody enjoyed lots of laughter and energy throughout the weekend.  On Saturday the Rev’d Tom Glover from St Pauls,  Winlaton in Durham, held a lovely service within a yurt, with a logfire burning.  The children and adults sang some fun hymns, at a pace that seemed to increase more quickly than some could manage, but this again really helped everyone to enjoy the service immensely.

Then it was back to the activities, and after tea came the 125th anniversary party.  Fun and games continued with adults and children all to take part, and then the unveiling of the cake or rather “cakes” with 125 candles all lit, and then blown out by two lucky winners of one of the games and the singing of “Happy Birthday”. Music dancing and refreshments were to follow until it was lights out for another day.

On the Sunday again breakfast, and continuation of the exciting activities, so that everybody had the chance to try everything, and then sadly it was soon time to round up the weekend with a thank you and certificate giving ceremony, and we all went home, absolutely shattered, but satisfied that we had a great weekend, and we knew that we really had Fun, Faith and Fellowship with the Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade.
