The National Band, Bugle & Drum School

CLCGB has a National Band (NB), which is made up of members from all over the country. The band was formed in 1978, as a traditional, military style marching band and it aims to bring CLCGB musicians together as a flagship band, in the spirit and fellowship of CLCGB. NB aims to enhance its members’ existing musical skills, encourage them to think about ways of improving musical performance within their companies and to perform to the highest possible standard at all times. Members of NB can be identified by their distinctive burgundy and gold gorget patches.

The Bugle School exists, with the aim of reinstating a bugle section to NB. It is open to beginners and novices who may wish to progress to become members of the NB Bugle Section.

The Drum School exists to progress side drummers who may not yet be ready to join the NB Drum Corps, and side drummers who just wish to improve their current skills.

Membership is open to all members of CLCGB, and a recruitment weekend is held each September. There is no formal audition, instead, those wishing to join NB are required to attend the weekend, where their suitability will be assessed during rehearsals. There is no minimum/maximum age, but members must display both an acceptable level of proficiency on their chosen instrument and be able to cope with the rigours of a NB weekend. The band meets six weekends each year, where it works primarily towards its annual concert which is usually held over the first May Bank Holiday weekend.

In its time, NB has performed at numerous events throughout England, Europe and America and has been attended by hundreds of CLCGB members. NB is particularly proud to have seen over 50 of its past members join His Majesty’s Armed Forces, most of which as musicians.
